Rising rural crime is leaving  many feeling  isolated, vulnerable and fearful of theft and loss. But it can be combated with a few simple steps.

Lets face it, we've all experienced theft or burglary of some kind. That feeling of someone being own your property, in your space, in your room -that feeling of being violated, not knowing what's missing and wondering why you have been targeted.

Rural property owners face other concerns as well hoping that each morning when they wake up that the bike is there to go get the cows or wondering if the milk vat has been tampered with? Not only is there financial loss of something being taken or vandalized but also the inconvenience of wasted time with insurance, sourcing replacement items and checking everywhere on the property that everything is where it should be. Who can afford that these days?

But, the impact on rural livelihoods of unwanted visitors on the property need not be tolerated. With new tech and a community wide approach to combatting rural crime rural property owners can get back control of their farmgate with physical deterrents and security solutions that work. You'll find that fighting back and getting visibility on your key assets around the home, property and entrance is easier than you think. And imagine if your whole road gets involved with a community wide approach to combatting rising rural crime with a clear message...we've had enough.

1. Roadside Signage

Up to date new and clear roadside signage is one of the best and simplest ways to start securing your property. A well positioned roadside security sign will help to deter intruders and sends a clear message that your have up to date security measures in place. Unfortunately to many rural properties these days have old, moss covered signs that deter no one!

Visible signs will also help to engage neighbors and other members of your community in a wider initiative that you just protecting your own property and stuff. Imagine a whole road covered with update to date and clear rural security signage -a very real and effective deterrent.

2. Surveillance Security Cameras

International research is clear -cameras work. Not only do they provide historical evidence with stored data either on an SD card or cloud service they act as deterrents. The good news is that today there are many camera options available these days. You just have to do a online search for security cameras to see the vast array. PTZ cameras may point tilt and zoom which can be ideal for wide open areas but these cameras tend to have less reach than say a bullet camera which can reach out over 20-30m depending on which model is chosen.

The not so good news is that there is too much choice and what they don't tell you is how challenging connecting wifi cameras could be to your home internet and that many of the options available are unlikely to be suitable for rural settings. Plus, its true what they say -when it comes to technology -you get what you pay for. So choose wisely and if you can pay more for better quality as your will never regret it.

3. Other physical deterrents

Visibility of deterrents is key to combatting the rural crime. Offer as many as possible physical deterrents and you are well on your way to improving your security. This could include gates or barrier arms, driveway beepers in additional to signage. License plate cameras are now more prevalent and available for a wide range of uses and settings. In exploring the options of LPR cameras consider ease of use, which platform they are using for viewing and managing images i.e. PC based or mobile phone APP. Also, ongoing monthly fees are likely payable for LPR camera technology due to the need for image processing, storage and hosting.

Improving the security on your property doesn't have to be complicated -it can be simple and painless. Plus, most people these days know inherently they need to do something about it. and just a few simple things can make all the difference. But few do. It seems many just don't get around to it until it's too late. There is a gap between knowing what to do and actually getting around to doing it!.  But don't worry, we're here to help with just a few easy steps.

Hi, we're Farmgate and we know what it feels like.

We understand what its like to be rural, fighting the elements each day, working the land, and struggling to find the time to get around to those things like improving your security like you know you need to. Thats why we started Farmgate. In fact the story of Farmgate couldn’t be more rural New Zealand. One day, while visiting a farmer for work, a good friend of ours heard the story about how this stressed-out farmer watched his four wheel motorbike being driven down a race on his farm. Assuming it was his wife, he thought nothing of it until he later realized the farm bike he relied on for work all day long had been stolen in broad daylight.

Farmgate is focused on just that -the farmgate with physical deterrents at the farm gate, around the property and in the community. Having deployed hundreds of rural security solutions the team at Farmgate soon learnt that combatting the rise of rural crime required a collective effort by farmers, rural people and whole communities. Its not just about the effectiveness of cameras and security measures but also about whole roads and communities working together. Thats what you get when you join Farmgate. You also get a simple process where we do the hard work for you.

Using the latest tech what once cost thousands of dollars for equipment, aerials, cabling and installation can be done DIY for a fraction of the price. This combined with the ability to install anywhere has now become the hallmark of Farmgate unique approach to rural security solutions. We operate from Hamilton with a tech base in South Auckland servicing the greater Waikato, Hauraki, Bay of Plenty,  Taranaki, Hawkes Bay and South Auckland regions.
